Cancer cells are mutated cells of the body which attack and destroy normal tissue of the body. Kidney cancers are a very common variety of cancer which occurs more in men. Smoking is an important risk factor for cancer formation in the kidneys.

During the initial stages of the cancer there are no symptoms but in later stages the kidney cancer can bleed and can cause pain and heaviness too. Very late cases can present with fever and lack of appetite due to metastasis to distant organs.

The best initial test to diagnose early kidney cancer is an ultrsonography of the kidneys since ultrasound is inexpensive and harmless therefore it is the best initial test. This allows the surgeons to detect early cancers which can then be treated while even sparing the rest of the kidneys.

Kidney cancers are best treated by surgery to remove the cancer. When the cancer is larger than 4cm and has destroyed more than 50% of the affected kidney then the best treatment is laparoscopic radical surgery to remove the cancer. In this surgery we remove the damaged kidney along with the cancer. This is a lifesaving surgery. And in cases where there is no spread to the rest of the body the patient can lead an excellent quality of life.

When the cancer is smaller than 4cm and more than 50% of the kidney is yet functioning then the best treatment is to remove the cancer with a margin of normal kidney tissue but sparing the rest of the functioning kidney. The best way to prevent kidney cancers is to quit smoking since smoking and sedentary lifestyle and obesity are the primary risk factors for development of kidney cancers.

Kidney stones are formed by deposition of calcium oxalate crystals within the urine. Calcium oxalate is normally present in urine and is kept in solution by the presence of citric acid which keeps the calium oxalate dissolved. If the citric acid is deficient in urine then the calcium crystals accumulate and stones are formed.

The first screening test for kidney stones is an ultrasonography. However to diagnose and plan the treatment accurately we always rely on a 32 slice CT scan of the kidney and ureter and bladder.

Kidney stones can be prevented by adequate water intake and also by intake of citrus fruits like musambi and oranges on a daily basis.
