Bladder cancer can develop more often in smokers. Although even non smokers can develop the cancer. Presence of obstruction and long standing bladder stones can predispose a person to development of the cancer.

Bladder cancer in the initial stages is symptoms free but in later stages the cancer can present with bleed in the urine and infection in the urine. Even later stages can present with lower abdomen pain and retention of urine.

Initially the bladder masses can be detected by ultrsonography but the best test to detect the bladder cancer is cystoscopy to evaluate the bladder. However to confirm the bladder cancer it is important to perform a bladder biopsy. To assess the extent of spread of the disease we can perform a whole body ct scan to assess the presence of distant spread.

In case of superficial bladder cancer the treatment is laser resection of the bladder tumor. However these tumors will tend to recur and therefore the patient is kept under cystoscopic surveillance for atleast ten years. The patient however has excellent quality of life and can lead a perfectly normal professional and domestic life. In case the tumor is muscle invasive then we need to remove the entire bladder and the prostate by radical laparoscopic surgery and then we reconstruct a new passage for the urine to pass which is called ilial conduit or a neo urinary bladder is constructed. After the resection of these cancers the patient can have a very good quality of life.
